Prayer

Prayer is an important part of the life of a Christian. Entering into prayer is entering into conversation with God. God loves us, made us, cares for us and wants to hear from us. Many people have said a prayer at some time in their lives; but entering into a meaningful, heartfelt prayer life can be an amazing experience.

What do I say?

Prayer is simply a conversation with God. Just say what is on your mind or in your heart.

If you are stuck for something to say to get you started, then you can try and pray with a teaspoon (TSP):

  • Thank you – this helps us to be to learn to be grateful for what we have and to acknowledge who gave us everything.
  • Sorry – to help remind us that we have all fallen short but in bringing our short fallings to God we receive forgiveness.
  • Please – God has told us to come to him and ask him for anything, this could be healing, strength, confidence, peace, finances… the list is endless.

What might he say?

God may answer you in many ways, some people receive words, some pictures, others feel his presence and can discern his will.

When we ask directly for things God may answer in 3 ways; yes, no and not yet. It is often the ‘not yet’ that can be hardest to accept. When we get a ‘no’ or a ‘not yet’ this isn’t because God doesn’t love us or we have fallen out of favour, but because He knows what is coming next and what is best for us. Just like a parent won’t let a child eat ice cream for every meal, no matter how much the child asks for it, because they know it would harm them.

As we get to know God, spend more time in prayer and get to know his plan for us, our prayers will become more spirit lead and focussed on His kingdom.
